Back-to-School Resources and Events Across Michigan Help Students Start the Year Strong

Back to School resourcesAs the 2026-27 school year begins, organizations across Michigan continue to host back-to-school events and community resource fairs throughout late August and early September, helping students and families access the supplies, services, and support they need for a successful school year.
From free backpacks and school supplies to haircuts, wellness services, educational resources, and family support programs, these events help reduce financial burdens while strengthening connections between families and their local communities.
Whether you live in Metro Detroit, a rural community in Northern Michigan, or somewhere in between, there are still opportunities to help students start the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

Southeast Michigan and Metro Detroit Events
Families throughout Southeast Michigan can take advantage of several upcoming events focused on student success and school readiness.
Featured Events
  • Back to School Fest (Detroit) | August 22
    Hosted at 1211 Trumbull, this event features free backpacks, family activities, community organizations, giveaways, music, face painting, and resources for students and parents. More than 400 backpacks are expected to be distributed.
  • Glam City Studio Community Giveback (Highland Park) | August 26
    Provides filled backpacks, free haircuts and hairstyles, food, and additional support services for participating families.

Mid-Michigan and Other Regions
Communities throughout Mid-Michigan and Western Michigan are continuing their efforts to support students and families as the school year begins.

Across Northern Michigan and many rural communities, organizations continue to help ensure students start the school year equipped and supported.
Northern Michigan Highlights
  • Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary Backpack for Kids (Grand Traverse County)
    The organization distributed more than 2,300 backpacks filled with school supplies to students throughout the region through its annual Backpack for Kids program, helping meet increasing demand across Northern Michigan.
  • Back to School Night (Traverse City)
    Brings together students, educators, families, and community partners as schools welcome students back for the 2026-27 year.
  • Back to School Carnival (Cadillac Area YMCA)
    Provides family activities, community engagement opportunities, and school-year preparation resources.
  • Backpack Bash (Maple Grove Township)
    Supports students and families with backpacks, supplies, and information about local support services.
  • Back to School Blast Off (Wolverine)
    Connects families with local resources and school readiness support in a rural Northern Michigan community.
  • Diggins Hill Community Block Party & School Supply Drive
    Combines family-friendly activities with school supply collection and distribution efforts benefiting students throughout the region.

Additional Rural Michigan Programs and Events

  • Community School Supply Distributions through Local Libraries
    Many rural libraries throughout counties including Otsego, Antrim, Kalkaska, Missaukee, Roscommon, and Presque Isle continue to provide supply drives and backpack assistance in partnership with schools and nonprofits.
  • County Community Action Agency Resource Events
    Several Community Action Agencies serving Northern and rural Michigan communities host school readiness events, family resource fairs, and educational support programs throughout late August and September.
  • Faith-Based School Supply Drives
    Churches and local ministries throughout communities such as Gaylord, Alpena, Grayling, Standish, Cheboygan, Rogers City, and Manistee continue collecting and distributing school supplies to students in need.
  • United Way of Northeast Michigan Programs
    Regional United Way organizations often coordinate school supply collections, teacher resource drives, and student assistance efforts before and during the first weeks of school.

For families who cannot attend an in-person event, virtual resources can provide valuable support.

  • Michigan 2-1-1 Online Resource Directory
    Families can search for local school supply assistance, food programs, transportation resources, utility assistance, and other support services.
  • Virtual School Readiness Workshops
    Many school districts offer online orientations, kindergarten readiness sessions, parent information nights, and technology training webinars before the start of school.
  • Michigan Department of Education Family Resources
    Provides online academic support tools, literacy resources, special education information, and guidance for families preparing children for school.
  • Public Library Virtual Learning Programs
    Libraries throughout Michigan continue offering virtual tutoring, reading challenges, homework help, STEM programming, and educational workshops.
  • United Way and Community Agency Webinars
    Many nonprofit organizations host virtual financial literacy workshops, family support programs, and educational readiness sessions throughout the school year.
