MI Water (Michigan Water Assistance Through Efficiency and Repairs) Program

WATER BILL ASSISTANCE

THAW’s MI Water Program supports healthy housing for financially insecure residents by maintaining water services.

 

MI Water Program has four components that may provide applicant assistance in with one or more of the following: 

  1.  Water Bill Payments for residential customers in Michigan who have a PAST due water bill, up to $2500 per household.
  2. Water Conservation includes an assessment, conservation education and training, and water efficiency supplies.
  3.  Remediation, including minor plumbing repairs designed to reduce water consumption.
  4.  Supportive Services, including wrap-around services and internal and external linkages to resources.

Phase 1 – Water Bill Assistance

Provides direct water bill payment assistance for residential customers throughout the state of Michigan with past-due water bills.

You are eligible for support from this program if:

  • Residential customer in Michigan
  • Income at or below 300% FPL
  • Proof that you are responsible for paying the water bill
  • Past due water bill
  • Experienced covid-hardship

 

Phase 2 – Minor Plumbing Repair and Remediation Assistance

THAW’s MI Water Program provides minor plumbing repairs, in-home water energy efficiency/conservation assessment, water energy efficiency conservation education, and water conservation efficiency supplies to eligible households within Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties with priority given to the poorest communities that were the hardest hit by Covid-19 including Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Ecorse, River Rouge, and Pontiac.*

*The Minor Plumbing Repair Program is currently paused until further notice. The following guidelines will apply when the program re-opens:

The home must be:

  1. Single-family owner-occupied with an income qualified household
  2. Single-family non-owner-occupied with an income qualified household
  3. Multi-family (attached or detached – up to 3 units) with an income qualified household.

Homeowners must provide proof of current homeowner’s insurance, mortgage statement, or property tax statement that is not delinquent. Renters must provide proof of current lease agreement and completed landlord approval form.

  1. The household must meet income qualifications and not exceed 300% FPL

  1. The repair is estimated to cost less than $2500.
  2. No household may receive more than $5000 in a lifetime.
  3. Minor Plumbing Repairs include, but are not limited to:
    • Repair or Replace garbage disposals
    • Repair or Replace shower heads and faucets
    • Repair water and waste lines
    • Repair or Replace toilets
    • Rod sewer lines
    • Repair or replace household pipes
    • Repair or replace sinks
    • Replace caulking in Bathroom or Kitchen
    • Slow or Clogged Drains
    • Low water pressure
    • Water Heater Issues
